To search the Facebook Ad Library well, pick a country and All ads, then put your keyword in quotes for an exact phrase match. Open Filters and set Media type to Videos to search inside video transcripts, and use Advertiser to narrow a keyword to one brand. Sort by Most recent for new launches, and read each ad's start date and copy count to spot what's working.

This guide is for media buyers, creative strategists and founders who use the Meta Ad Library for research and keep drowning in results. Every tip was tested in the library on October 23, 2026, using protein powder ads and Gymshark as examples.

What you need before you start

Nothing. The Ad Library is free, and you can search it without a Facebook account. It shows every ad currently running across Meta's apps, plus ads about social issues, elections or politics from the past seven years and ads that ran in the EU or UK in the past year.

New ads appear in the library within 24 hours of their first impression, according to Meta's own note on the library's home page. If you're new to the tool, start with our full guide on how to use the Facebook Ad Library.

How to run a Facebook Ad Library search: step by step

These 4 steps cover the basic search. The 11 tips below build on them.

Step 1: Type a keyword or brand and pick from the dropdown

Go to facebook.com/ads/library, choose your country and set the ad category to All ads. The search box then reads Search by keyword or advertiser.

Type a brand name and wait for the dropdown. The top line offers Search this exact phrase. Under Advertisers you'll see Pages that match, with their handles and follower counts.

Pick a Page to see only that advertiser's ads. Press Enter instead to search the words in every ad.

Step 2: Read the result count and match type

Above the grid you'll see an approximate result count and a line telling you how the search matched. For "protein powder" in quotes it reads ~6,900 results and "These results include ads that match your exact phrase search."

Meta Ad Library results for "protein powder" in the United States showing about 6,900 results for an exact phrase searchMeta Ad Library results for "protein powder" in the United States showing about 6,900 results for an exact phrase search

If the count is in the tens of thousands, your search is too broad. Use the tips below to cut it down.

Step 3: Open Filters

Click Filters. You get six controls: Language, Advertiser, Platform, Media type, Active status and Impressions by date.

Set what you need and click the Apply button at the bottom. Active filters show up as chips under the Sort by button, and you can remove each one with its X.

Step 4: Choose how results are sorted

Click Sort by. There are two options: Impressions: high to low, which is the default, and Most recent.

Impressions sort puts the ads with the most reach first, but Meta doesn't show the numbers. Most recent shows what just launched.

11 Facebook Ad Library search tips that save hours

Each tip below was tested in the library on October 23, 2026.

Tip 1: Use quotes for an exact phrase

Without quotes, the library matches ads that contain your words anywhere and in any order. With quotes, it only matches the exact phrase.

The difference is big. "protein powder" in the US returned about 21,000 active ads without quotes and about 6,900 with them. You can also pick Search this exact phrase from the dropdown instead of typing quotes.

Tip 2: Search inside video transcripts

This is the most useful filter most people never touch. Search a keyword, open Filters and set Media type to Videos. Meta describes it as "Keyword within video transcript or ad copy".

The Media type dropdown in Meta Ad Library filters with Videos highlighted, described as keyword within video transcript or ad copyThe Media type dropdown in Meta Ad Library filters with Videos highlighted, described as keyword within video transcript or ad copy

That means you find videos where the creator says the phrase out loud, even when the caption doesn't mention it. Search a hook you've heard, like "I was skeptical", and you'll find other ads using it.

Tip 3: Use Memes to search text inside images

The Memes option under Media type is described as "Images with text". It matches your keyword against the text in the image, which is how you find static ads built around a headline.

Images does the opposite: images with little to no text. Use it when you want lifestyle and product shots rather than text-heavy statics.

Tip 4: Pick brands from the Advertisers list, not the results

Searching a brand name as a keyword returns every ad that mentions it, including resellers and affiliates. Picking the brand under Advertisers shows only that Page's ads.

Check the follower count and the verified badge before you click. A "gymshark" search lists the real Gymshark Page with 2.2M followers, but further down the same list are Pages like "Gymshark Sale HQ" and "Gymshark Deals & Drops" with 0 followers.

Tip 5: Check for regional Pages

Big brands often run separate Pages by country or audience. The same Gymshark search shows Gymshark Women, plus Gymshark Pages for Germany and France.

If a brand's ad count looks low, look for a second Page. You may be seeing one region's ads, not the whole strategy.

Tip 6: Narrow a keyword search to one advertiser

Inside a keyword search, Filters has an Advertiser dropdown that lists the brands in your results. For "protein powder" it listed brands like Apex Labs and Arrae.

This is the fastest way to see how one competitor talks about a topic. Search the benefit or ingredient, then pick the brand.

Tip 7: Search the customer's words, not the category

Brands rarely write "protein powder ad". They write what the customer feels: "bloating", "no chalky taste", "clean ingredients". Search those phrases in quotes.

You'll find angles from brands you didn't know about, which is how you spot new competitors before they get big. Our guide on how to see your competitors' Facebook ads shows how to turn that into a competitor list.

Tip 8: Sort by Most recent to see new launches

The default sort is Impressions: high to low. That's useful for finding a brand's biggest ads, but it hides what launched this week.

Switch Sort by to Most recent and check a competitor's Page every Monday. New angles, offers and seasonal pushes show up here first.

Tip 9: Read the start date and copy count on every card

The library doesn't show performance, but two lines on every card come close. Started running on tells you how long the brand has kept paying for an ad. N ads use this creative and text tells you how many times they've duplicated it.

Meta Ad Library ad card for ProDough Shop showing Started running on 18 May 2026 and 3 ads use this creative and textMeta Ad Library ad card for ProDough Shop showing Started running on 18 May 2026 and 3 ads use this creative and text

An ad that has run for months, with several copies, is a strong sign it's working. "This ad has multiple versions" usually means the brand is testing variations of it.

Tip 10: Filter by platform and language

Platform splits results by Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads. Use it when you only care about one placement, like Instagram.

Language only lists languages found in your results. For "protein powder" in the US, it offered English and Spanish. Pick English to clear out ads you can't use as references.

Every choice you make is saved in the page URL: the country, the keyword, exact phrase, active status, media type and sort. Copy it and you have a saved search.

Keep a list of URLs for your top competitors and key phrases. Each week, open them and sort by Most recent, and you'll rarely miss a new launch. To keep the ads you find, see how to download ads from the Facebook Ad Library.

Common Facebook Ad Library search problems

  • A brand shows no ads. Check the country. Results are per country, so a brand that only advertises in the UK shows nothing under United States.
  • Inactive ads are missing. Outside the EU and UK, the library mostly keeps ads while they run. Switch to an EU country to see ads that ran there in the past year.
  • Too many irrelevant results. Use quotes, then add the Advertiser or Media type filter.

What Facebook Ad Library search can't tell you

The library is a great free tool, but search has limits you can't filter around.

  • No performance numbers. You can sort by impressions but can't see them, and there's no spend, clicks or sales for regular ads.
  • No runtime sort. You have to read start dates card by card to find the longest running ads.
  • Duplicates everywhere. One creative can show as many ads, so a brand with dozens of results may only have a handful of real ideas.
  • No memory. Most ads outside the EU and UK disappear once they stop, so you can't look back at what a brand ran last year.
  • No alerts. You only see a new launch if you remember to check.

A faster way: search winning ads with Adspo

Adspo is built for the part the free library leaves out: telling you which ads are working. It covers 10,000+ verified brands and shows each unique creative once, so duplicates don't bury the real ideas.

Every creative is ranked by impressions within the brand's own account, and you can sort a brand's ads by longest running in one click. Here's Gymshark in the Adspo app: 2,448 active creatives running as 39,167 ads. That's the duplicate problem in one number: the Ad Library shows you every ad, Adspo shows you each idea once.

And here are Gymshark's active creatives sorted by longest running. The top one has run for 643 days, and you didn't have to read a single start date to find it.

How Adspo answers each limit:

  • No performance numbers: impression ranking within each brand's account shows what it's pushing hardest.
  • No runtime sort: sort any brand by longest running.
  • Duplicates: creative-level tracking shows each creative once, from launch to turnoff.
  • No memory: each creative keeps its full lifespan, from launch to turnoff.
  • No alerts: track unlimited brands and get notified when a new ad goes live.

Adspo costs $29/month, or $19/month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial (14 days on yearly).

Frequently asked questions

How do I search the Facebook Ad Library?

Go to facebook.com/ads/library, pick a country and choose All ads as the ad category. Then type a keyword or a brand name in the box that says Search by keyword or advertiser. Pick a brand under Advertisers to see its Page, or press Enter to search ad text. Use Filters and Sort by to narrow the results.

Is Facebook Ad Library search free?

Yes. The Meta Ad Library is free and you can search it without logging in to Facebook. It covers ads currently running across Meta's apps, plus ads about social issues, elections or politics from the past seven years and ads that ran in the EU or UK in the past year.

How do I search an exact phrase in the Facebook Ad Library?

Put the phrase in quotes, like "protein powder", or pick Search this exact phrase from the dropdown under the search box. In the US on October 23, 2026, "protein powder" in quotes returned about 6,900 active ads, against about 21,000 without quotes.

Can you search video transcripts in the Facebook Ad Library?

Yes. Search a keyword, open Filters and set Media type to Videos. Meta describes that option as keyword within video transcript or ad copy, so you'll find videos that say the phrase out loud, not just ones that write it. The Memes option does the same for text inside images.

How do I search the Facebook Ad Library in English only?

Run your search, open Filters and pick English under Language. The language list only shows languages found in your current results, so you may see just a few options.

Can I see which ads perform best in the Facebook Ad Library?

Not directly. Meta doesn't show clicks, sales or spend for regular ads. Results sort by Impressions: high to low by default, but without numbers. The best free signals are how long an ad has run and how many ads use the same creative. Adspo ranks every creative by impressions within the brand's own account and shows its runtime.

Wrapping it up

Good Facebook Ad Library search comes down to a few habits: quotes for exact phrases, the Videos filter for transcripts, Advertisers for real brand Pages, and reading start dates and copy counts on every card. Bookmark the searches that matter and check them weekly.
